About Stillhouse Through
the Winter began as two practice sessions that were recorded to an old AKAI quarter-inch
tape machine. As a result of these sessions, producer/engineer Ryan Pickett set
up a mobile studio in a remote country cabin in Rougemont, NC to capture Stillhouse's
music on analogue tape. Stillhouse recorded the basic tracks live during three snowy
days at the cabin in January 2004. Due to the hectic
schedules of the band members, who tour nationally playing in various roots oriented
acts such as Tift Merritt, Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion, and Chatham County
Line, it took over a year to complete Through the Winter. Members of the band recorded
overdubs and oversaw different aspects of the mixing process separately with Ryan;
then the results of their efforts were sent to other band members for approval as
they toured in all parts of the U.S. and Europe (Johnny did a harmony vocal over
the phone while driving home from a show). The recording was finished in July 2005.
Stillhouse
was formed in 1998 by Raleigh, NC singer-songwriter Dave Wilson. The first incarnation
of the band, which included Greg Readling on pedal steel/piano and Jay Brown on
bass, performed only live for a couple of years. Zeke Hutchins joined the group
on drums in 2000, and Stillhouse continued to perform their brand of 70's inspired
singer-songwriter rock, reminiscent of Buffalo Springfield, The Band, Badfinger,
or Emitt Rhodes. A few years ago guitarist/vocalist and songwriter Johnny Irion
joined the band. These five guys are the musicians on Through the Winter. All the
songs were written by Dave Wilson.
